Bright Ultraportable fit for the conference room-EzPro 615H

Presentation Magazine, March, 2001

The new EzPro 615H is an extensively revised and upgraded version of the earlier 610 and 615 EzPro models. The EzPro 615H is a bit smaller and lighter than the earlier version, but it is much brighter and performs better all round.

The performance increases come from optical improvements in the way of microlenses and better LCDs, as well as a better, higher wattage lamp. The new combination works well. The brightness is almost twice as bright as what I have seen in earlier models of this series. Also the new EzPro 615H has good corner brightness (84 percent) and low across-screen unevenness at only 6 percent.

I measured the EzPro 615H's color saturation at 16.2, slightly below the 16.25 color saturation I observed on the previous model, and a bit below average for a three-panel, x-cube-based system. When compared to any one-chip DLP projector's images, however its color saturation is far superior. The EzPro 615H's white point at 4.13 units from standard D65 was okay, but its color saturation allowed the 615H to project a much better image than the In Focus LP350 did from the same DVD source. The EzPro 615H's onscreen images with video looked alive and vibrant, whereas the In Focus LP 350's images looked comparatively flat.

The EzPro 615H's connectors - power, data, video - are conveniently placed at the back. Those connections include two (yes, two) separate computer inputs and a rare (for low-cost units) monitor output. This projector offers no serial-bus connectivity, but Optoma does supply a separate "remote" IR receiver that you can connect to your serial port and use to mouse around and control your presentation.

The EzPro 615H is a hard projector to criticize, it performs well and isn't missing much. It resizes SXGA images well, and also provides a few things that other projectors don't, such as great colors, second input and monitor output. It also costs $1,000 less than the In Focus LP350. Such a deal.
