Even with the curtains open and the lights on (I review in the evening and it’s most definitely autumn right now) the image is clear, sharp and vibrant. However, close the curtains and flick off the lights and the colours really pop.

Straight out of the box, the depth and vibrancy of the video produced was impressive.

Also, the colour and brightness uniformity was pretty spot on.

Even when getting close to the image, it remains sharp.

Optoma have again managed to produce a projector that is impressive for the price.

I really like the colour depth and detail and the ease of set up. It also proved its worth for casual gaming, however I would suggest you looked at the GT1080Darbee if gaming is your main thing.

“When watching something in 4K it is simply stunning. Almost like a window to the world outside. Hooking up my PC to the projector I watched some of the 4K nature videos on YouTube and you feel like you could step into the scenes. It is impossible to describe in the written word the step up 4K gives you when compared to the current HD images. You just need to try and experience it for yourself.”

“Once you get it set up to your liking you will find the images are rich, balanced, sharp and dynamic. The projector can deal with fast-moving images without thing becoming blurry. Playing video games was a delight with the processor having no problem keeping up with the fast gameplay ensuring a high-quality gaming experience.”

This uses “stereoscopic depth information from a human-vision-based model” to enhance the clarity and contrast of a video source and boost it to unheard of levels. It works, too, adding an incredible solidity and texture to the projected image that almost makes it look like you’ve changed from 1080p to 4k. The processing is adjustable and takes a bit of twiddling to get set up just right, but once you’re there, the image quality is astonishing, and it’s coupled with a punchy, colourful presentation that makes films a joy to behold. A brightness of 3,000 lumens also means it’s usable in daylight as well as when the curtains are drawn. For the money, it’s simply brilliant.

“Often with a bright, multi-purpose media-room style PJ there’s a level of compromise, be it in colour fidelity or operating noise. This Optoma gets the presentational balance about right.  It looks convincing with movies but is also a fast, colourful gaming display. And the compact form factor is very convenient.”

HCC verdict:

“This entertaining all-purpose movie and games projector is cinematic when it needs to be, but offers low-lag gaming too. Darbee processing proves a welcome extra.”

“Picture detail is unquestionably high. The projector looks particularly fine with the 10-bit 2160p output from a Sky Q set-top box. Star Trek Beyond is hugely engaging in terms of fine picture detail and color vibrancy; Warcraft shows a mesmerizing amount of texture and fine detail.”

“It’s often difficult to appreciate the resolution boost offered by 4K UHD on a relatively small UHD TV. However, supersize your sources to 100 inches plus, and the extra detail and depth becomes wonderfully self-evident. This Optoma does a marvelous cinematic job, particularly with the likes of Sky Q and streaming 4K dongles, as well as regular Blu-ray. Plus, color fidelity is lush. It’s also compact and respectfully quiet in operation.”
